The political standoff in Parliament showed no signs of easing on Monday as the Monsoon Session entered its final week, with the government offering to hold a detailed discussion on the student protests and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s response.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Centre was prepared to discuss the issue in detail, but insisted that Opposition parties must allow Parliament to function and hear the government’s side.
Rijiju said the government had made a clear offer for a comprehensive discussion and expected Opposition MPs to participate rather than disrupt proceedings.
Centre Wants Discussion On Student Movement
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament complex, Rijiju said the government was ready to discuss the students’ movement and the developments surrounding it.
He stressed that Amit Shah was prepared to respond to the issue in Parliament and urged Opposition members to hear the Home Minister before raising further objections.
The government has been under sustained pressure from the Opposition over the alleged violence during a protest on July 20.
Rahul Gandhi Keeps Pressure On Amit Shah
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly questioned Shah’s absence from Parliament and demanded that the Home Minister be held accountable for the July 20 incident.
Gandhi has also called for an independent investigation monitored by the Supreme Court, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the violence require a detailed probe.
The Congress leader has continued to target the government through social media, alleging that the incident has damaged the political credibility of the Narendra Modi government.
Opposition Protest Continues Inside Parliament
The broader INDIA bloc has supported the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the issue, with repeated disruptions affecting proceedings during the Monsoon Session.
Earlier on Monday, Opposition MPs carrying placards gathered near Makar Dwar of Parliament and raised slogans against Amit Shah.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also maintained that the parliamentary deadlock would not end unless the Home Minister responds to the concerns raised by the Opposition.
The government’s latest offer could now provide a route towards resolving the impasse, but the key question remains whether the Opposition will agree to the proposed discussion and allow Amit Shah to make his response.
With the Monsoon Session scheduled to conclude on August 13, both the government and Opposition have limited time to find common ground on the contentious issue.
