Five Chinese nationals were killed in a tragic explosion during an attack on their convoy by a suicide bomber in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.
The suicide bomber reportedly targeted an explosives-laden vehicle at a convoy of Chinese engineers en route from Islamabad to their camp in Dasu, situated in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to regional police chief Mohammad Ali Gandapur, as cited by Reuters.
“Five Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver were killed in the attack,” stated Gandapur.
As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Bakht Zahir, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Bisham, described the incident as a “suicide blast,” mentioning that authorities were gathering evidence, as reported by Dawn.com.
Security measures have been heightened in the area, with bodies being transferred to a nearby hospital, Zahir added.
“We will investigate from where and how the vehicle of a suicide bomber came and how it happened,” noted the SHO.
This incident marks the third significant attack on Chinese interests in Pakistan within a week.
Earlier attacks targeted an airbase and a strategic port in the southwest province of Balochistan, where China is heavily investing in infrastructure projects.
Chinese engineers, alongside Pakistani construction workers, have been engaged in hydroelectric projects for several years as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative in the western province of Khyber-Paktunkhwa.
Dasu, the site of a significant dam project, has been subjected to previous attacks.
In a tragic event in 2021, nine Chinese nationals and two Pakistani children lost their lives in an attack in Dasu. The assault occurred when a bus carrying Chinese engineers and workers to the Dasu Hydropower Project site was targeted.
