China Renews Claim Over Arunachal Pradesh, Calls It ‘Zangnan’; India Rejects Assertion

In a fresh escalation of its territorial rhetoric, China has once again asserted its claim over Arunachal Pradesh, describing the region as “Zangnan” and reiterating that it falls under Chinese sovereignty.

The statement has reignited tensions between Beijing and New Delhi over the long-standing boundary dispute in the eastern sector.

China Doubles Down on Territorial Claim

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China has “never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally set up by India.”

He further asserted, “Zangnan is China’s territory,” reinforcing Beijing’s consistent stance on the disputed region south of the McMahon Line.

The remarks came shortly after China released its sixth batch of standardized place names for locations in the region on April 10, a move widely seen as an attempt to strengthen its territorial claims.

Renaming Strategy Continues

China’s latest renaming exercise is part of an ongoing pattern, with similar batches issued in 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025. These efforts are aimed at symbolically asserting administrative control over the region, despite India’s objections.

India Rejects China’s Claims

India has firmly rejected China’s assertions, reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of the country.

New Delhi has consistently described China’s renaming exercises as “mischievous” and lacking legal validity, emphasizing that such actions do not alter the ground reality.

Border Tensions Remain Unresolved

The latest exchange underscores the persistent boundary dispute between India and China, particularly in the eastern sector along the McMahon Line.

Despite multiple rounds of diplomatic and military-level talks in recent years, both sides continue to maintain sharply differing positions, keeping tensions alive in the strategically sensitive region.
