Women’s Reservation Rollout: Centre Assures States of Fair Seat Increase Amid Delimitation Concerns

The Union government has moved to allay concerns raised by several states over the implementation of the women’s reservation law, assuring that no region will be disadvantaged when the policy comes into effect.

Officials indicated that the expansion of parliamentary seats will be carried out in a balanced and proportionate manner across all states, addressing fears of unequal political gains.

Centre Promises Balanced Seat Expansion

According to government sources, each state is expected to see a similar rise in representation, with the total number of Lok Sabha seats likely to increase by around 50 per cent.

This assurance is aimed particularly at southern states, which have expressed apprehensions that more populous regions such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar could gain a disproportionate advantage after delimitation.

Major Constitutional Amendment on the Horizon

The Centre is set to introduce a key constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on April 16, proposing to expand the strength of the Lok Sabha from the current 543 seats to nearly 850.

The move is part of the broader effort to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in both Parliament and state legislative assemblies.

To enable this, the government plans to amend Article 81 of the Constitution, allowing up to 815 members to be elected from states and up to 35 from Union Territories.

Delimitation Exercise Sparks Debate

The implementation of the women’s reservation law is expected to follow a nationwide delimitation exercise, which will redraw constituency boundaries based on population and other factors.

This process has triggered concerns among some states about a possible shift in political representation and influence.

The government has said further clarifications will be provided during parliamentary discussions.

Rijiju Warns Against ‘Misinformation’

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju cautioned against attempts to spread misinformation, particularly targeting southern states.

“Some people are trying to mislead the South Indian States on Women Reservation by providing wrong Delimitation figures. There should be no politics in giving reservations to Women in Lok Sabha & Legislative Assemblies. All political parties are united for Nari Shakti,” he said in a post on X.

Stalin Announces Protest in Tamil Nadu

Meanwhile, M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has announced a statewide black flag protest on April 16 against the proposed delimitation exercise.

The decision followed an emergency meeting of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), where party MPs and district leaders discussed the potential impact of the changes.

Expressing concern, Stalin said, “The sword that hung over our heads has now descended upon us.”

He also revealed that the DMK is reaching out to MPs from other states to build a coordinated opposition, questioning whether the move could penalise southern states despite their contributions to national development.

Political Flashpoint Ahead of Parliamentary Debate

With the bill set to be introduced, the issue has quickly turned into a political flashpoint, with competing narratives emerging over representation, fairness, and federal balance.

While the Centre maintains that the reform will empower women and ensure equitable growth, opposition leaders warn of deeper implications for India’s political landscape.
