New Delhi: Following the deportation of illegal Indian immigrants from the US, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram questioned the Central government on its efforts to prevent Indian youths from attempting illegal entry into foreign nations.
Chidambaram raised concerns over the “inhuman treatment” of deportees, stating, “They may have entered the US illegally, but deportation should be done in a humanitarian manner. They cannot be chained and transported in a military aircraft.” He further questioned why Indian youths risk illegal immigration, adding, “Apparently, they think their conditions in India are worse. What is the government doing to stop this?”
He also demanded strict action against human traffickers who lure young Indians into illegal immigration. “Most of these agents operate from India. Why is the government not cracking down on them?” he asked, suggesting that PM Modi should raise the issue during his US visit on February 12.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar defended the deportation, stating that it is every nation’s duty to repatriate its citizens found residing illegally. He clarified that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) procedures have remained unchanged since 2013 and that India is engaging with US authorities to ensure deportees are treated fairly.
Opposition MPs staged a protest outside Parliament, criticizing the government’s handling of the issue and demanding accountability.
