‘Cabinet Resolution to Safeguard Democracy’: Kiren Rijiju Urges Public Awareness on Emergency

New Delhi: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday emphasized the collective duty of all citizens to protect democracy, as the central government marked the 50th anniversary of the Emergency by observing Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day).

Speaking to reporters in Shimla, Rijiju revealed that the Union Cabinet had recently passed a resolution under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding democratic values.

“Yesterday, we passed a resolution in the cabinet under PM Modi’s leadership. It is the responsibility of every Indian to save democracy,” Rijiju said. “It’s been fifty years since the Emergency was imposed in 1975, and we are reaching out to the public to ensure such a dark chapter never repeats itself.”

The minister described the 21-month-long Emergency, declared by the then Congress government, as one of the most serious assaults on India’s democratic fabric. He said the government is committed to reminding citizens — especially the youth — about the dangers of authoritarianism.

“It is the cabinet’s responsibility to govern the country, but it is also our duty to take the spirit of this resolution to the people,” he added.
