New Delhi: Union Minister BL Verma on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Congress MP and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, accusing him of making “pro-Pakistan” statements after the latter questioned the authenticity of India’s surgical strikes in response to the 2019 Pulwama terror attack that claimed 40 CRPF lives.
Speaking to the media, Verma said, “Congress leaders give such statements which are pro-Pakistan. They try to weaken the morale of the army, but the morale of our brave army soldiers is not going to be weakened. Under the leadership of PM Modi, the Indian Army will give a befitting reply at the right time.”
The controversy erupted after Channi, during a press conference on Friday, cast doubt over the 2019 air strikes conducted by the Indian armed forces. “To date, I could not find where the (surgical) strike took place, where men were killed at that time, and where this happened in Pakistan. Will we not find out if a bomb is dropped in our country? They say that they did a surgical strike in Pakistan. Nothing had happened. Nowhere was a surgical strike seen. Nobody came to know…I have always demanded (proof),” said Channi, stirring political backlash.
Verma responded strongly, saying the Congress was attempting to undermine the armed forces, but reaffirmed that the Indian military remains resolute under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
In a separate political remark, the Union Minister addressed the INDI alliance’s ongoing strategy meetings in Bihar, claiming that their efforts would not stop the NDA from winning the state convincingly. “No matter how many meetings the INDI alliance holds, NDA will win in Bihar under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi… The country is moving forward at the pace of development, and Bihar will also move forward at the same pace,” Verma asserted.
The state is set to witness a high-stakes electoral contest, with the NDA, comprising Janata Dal (United) led by Nitish Kumar and the BJP, squaring off against the Mahagathbandhan—a coalition of Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Left parties.
