“Rain Has Finally Arrived, Mumbaikars Should Enjoy It”: Mayor Ritu Tawde Inspects Gandhi Market Waterlogging Zone in Mumbai

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the Gandhi Market area near King’s Circle on Tuesday to assess ongoing waterlogging issues and review the performance of pumping systems as heavy monsoon showers continue to affect parts of the city.

During the inspection, she reviewed drainage operations and checked whether the pumping systems were functioning effectively to clear accumulated rainwater from the area, which is known for recurring flooding during the monsoon season.

In a post shared on social media, she said she had visited the site to understand the ground situation after rainfall and to evaluate the measures being implemented to address long-standing waterlogging concerns. She also mentioned that instructions had been issued to civic officials to speed up drainage work and ensure proper maintenance of manholes for public safety.

Speaking during the visit, the Mayor said that monsoon showers were a welcome relief for the city after a long wait and urged citizens to enjoy the rains while civic teams remained deployed across key locations. She added that multiple pumping units were actively working at the site to clear water and keep roads accessible.

She noted that waterlogging was mainly being reported in low-lying areas, including certain subway stretches, and said additional pumps or manpower could be deployed wherever required to manage the situation more effectively. According to her, the administration was continuously working to divert water into drainage channels to prevent further accumulation.

Responding to criticism, she said that field presence was essential for solving civic issues and emphasized that on-ground action was more important than remote commentary. She also added that the administration remained open to constructive suggestions from the opposition or citizens regarding problem areas.

On the city’s water supply situation, she said that current reserves were being managed carefully and were expected to last until mid-August, while also expressing hope for continued rainfall, especially in lake catchment areas, to strengthen long-term water availability for Mumbai residents.
