The Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana is facing a significant crisis as three Independent MLAs withdrew their support and announced their intention to campaign for the Congress party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

With the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections scheduled for May 25, the timing of this withdrawal of support couldn’t be more critical for the ruling BJP government in Haryana. The decision by the three MLAs—Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen, and Dharampal Gonder—was communicated to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya through a formal letter.

This development not only weakens the Saini-led government’s position but also highlights the shifting political dynamics within the state. The withdrawal of support by these Independent MLAs signals a potential realignment of political allegiances, with the Congress party likely to benefit from their decision.

The situation is further compounded by the uncertainty surrounding another independent MLA, Balraj Kundu from Meham, who is yet to clarify his position. The lack of clarity adds to the political uncertainty and puts additional pressure on the BJP government.

While the BJP downplays the crisis, citing the six-month gap required before another No-confidence motion can be initiated, the reality on the ground suggests otherwise. Despite winning a floor test in March 2024, the government now finds itself grappling with internal dissent and the looming specter of electoral repercussions.

The upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, scheduled for October-November this year, add another layer of complexity to the current political landscape. The BJP’s ability to navigate through this crisis and shore up support will be closely watched as the state braces for a potentially tumultuous electoral season.

As the BJP government in Haryana scrambles to contain the fallout from the withdrawal of support by Independent MLAs, the political future of the state hangs in the balance, with implications that extend far beyond the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
