Assembly Speaker election will be held during the winter session: Nana Patole

Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President (MPCC) Nana Patole has clarified that the election for the post of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will be held in the winter session in December and the Speaker will be from the Congress party.

Speaking to media persons at Tilak Bhavan, Patole said that the duration of the sessions held so far were short due to Covid19 restrictions. The election process for the post of Speaker takes at least three days, so the election could not take place so far. In the winter session, however, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will be elected by voice vote.

“There is nothing wrong with the method of voice voting; it is being practised in all the states across the country. The Legislative Assembly has made changes in its rules. In Maharashtra too, the election of the Chairman of the Legislative Council is done in the same manner, so there is no reason to object if it is being used for the Speaker’s elections”, said Patole.

When asked about the allegations levelled by Fadnavis against Rahul Gandhi in the Amravati riots issue, Patole said that BJP MLAs and leaders were active in the Amravati riots, and only BJP leaders were making provocative statements and fueling the situation.

Patole further said that it is wrong on the part of the Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis to criticise Rahul Gandhi over the Amravati riots. This is an attempt to discredit Rahul Gandhi and such an attempt is being made by BJP repeatedly. Fadnavis has no moral right to talk about Rahul Gandhi.

The Gandhi family has sacrificed their lives for the country, what has the BJP has done?, said Patole. He further added that those who are trying to sell the country should not teach us nationalism.
