Since its sweeping victory in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has thrived under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with his charisma serving as a driving force behind the party’s electoral successes. As discussions about the post-Modi era gain traction, the question of who is best suited to fill his shoes looms large.
The latest Mood of the Nation opinion poll conducted by India Today indicates a continued support for PM Modi, projecting a potential third consecutive term for him. However, the survey also prompts voters to consider the prospects of other BJP leaders who could potentially succeed him.
According to the survey, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emerges as a frontrunner, with 29% of respondents favoring him as the best candidate to take over from PM Modi. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath closely follows, with 25% of respondents backing him. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also garners significant support, with 16% of those surveyed expressing confidence in him.
The Mood of the Nation poll, conducted between December 15, 2023, and January 28, 2024, gathered insights from 35,801 respondents across all Lok Sabha seats. However, it’s essential to note the inherent limitations of opinion polls and their potential for inaccuracies.
Since assuming office, PM Modi has steered the BJP with his vision of development and governance, solidifying his position as India’s most popular leader. Any successor to him will undoubtedly face the challenge of living up to his legacy.
Amit Shah, often hailed as the BJP’s ‘Chanakya’ for his strategic prowess, has played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s electoral strategies. His meticulous planning and political acumen have contributed significantly to the BJP’s electoral victories.
Yogi Adityanath, serving his second term as Uttar Pradesh CM, has rapidly ascended the party ranks and commands respect among party workers. Despite controversies, his decisive actions against crime and efforts to revitalize the BJP’s presence in Uttar Pradesh have earned him popularity.
Nitin Gadkari, recognized as a problem-solver, has earned bipartisan praise for his initiatives as Transport Minister, particularly in infrastructure development. His ability to bridge political divides and deliver tangible results has garnered admiration across party lines.
As the BJP contemplates its leadership transition, the party faces the challenge of identifying a leader capable of maintaining its electoral dominance and furthering its agenda. The post-Modi era presents both opportunities and challenges, requiring astute leadership to navigate India’s political landscape effectively.
