The second day of the 18th BRICS Summit began in New Delhi on Sunday, with leaders gathering at Bharat Mandapam for discussions on how countries can work together to build a stronger and more inclusive global economy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting the summit, which brings together leaders from BRICS member countries, partner nations and invited countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the key leaders attending the meeting.
Leaders Arrive for Open Plenary
The leaders began arriving at Bharat Mandapam at around 10 am. A group photograph was held at approximately 10:35 am before the main discussions began.
The open plenary session is focused on “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.”
The discussions are expected to look at ways to make economies and supply chains more resilient, expand cooperation in technology and address challenges linked to climate change and sustainable development.
Global South Remains a Key Focus
The second day builds on the discussions held during the opening day of the summit, where India highlighted the need for developing countries to have a greater role in global decision-making.
Prime Minister Modi had called for the Global South to move from being a “rule-taker” to becoming a “rule-shaper.” India has also pushed for changes in international institutions, including reforms to the UN Security Council and better representation for developing nations in global financial bodies.
The broader discussions are expected to examine how BRICS can contribute to more balanced global growth and stronger cooperation among developing economies.
New Delhi Declaration Adopted
The second day’s discussions come after BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration by consensus on Saturday.
The declaration followed talks on inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateral cooperation. Its adoption was one of the major outcomes of the first day of the summit.
Trade, Technology and Sustainability on Agenda
Economic cooperation is another important part of the second-day agenda.
Leaders are expected to discuss trade, supply chains, technological development, climate-related challenges and sustainable growth. The summit is also looking at ways to deepen cooperation among developing nations.
These discussions are particularly important as BRICS seeks to expand its role in international economic and political affairs.
Modi Set for Bilateral Meetings
Apart from the main plenary session, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several visiting leaders.
The meetings are expected to cover India’s relations with BRICS members, partner countries and other participating nations. Trade, technology, development and global governance are likely to feature prominently in these engagements.
The second day is expected to conclude with the formalisation of key outcomes under India’s 2026 BRICS chairship.
India’s theme for its BRICS presidency is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting the main priorities of this year’s summit.
