Rain returned to Mumbai on Sunday, bringing moderate showers to several parts of the city after a prolonged dry spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rain at a number of locations during the day and issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai and the surrounding metropolitan region.
The weather department has also warned of possible thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in isolated areas.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Possible
According to the IMD forecast, some parts of Mumbai and the region could experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, along with light to moderate rainfall.
Winds during the weather activity may reach speeds of 40–50 kmph. The IMD has advised people to remain cautious during periods of lightning and thunderstorms.
Rain was visible in several areas on Sunday morning, including the Juinagar–Panvel stretch of the Pune-Konkan Highway.
4.46-Metre High Tide Expected
Mumbai is also expected to witness a high tide of around 4.46 metres at 1:05 pm on Sunday.
In the 24 hours preceding the report, average rainfall recorded across Mumbai’s three regions was between 52 mm and 73 mm.
Mumbai Saw a Very Dry August
The return of rain comes after an unusually dry August for Mumbai.
The city received less than 200 mm of rain during August, with IMD figures showing rainfall was around 66 per cent below the normal level. This made August one of the city’s driest such months in recent years.
The IMD has indicated that rainfall could remain below normal during September as well, although spells of light to moderate rain may continue from time to time.
Mumbai’s AQI in Moderate Category
While rain improved weather conditions in parts of the city, Mumbai’s overall air quality remained in the Moderate category on Sunday morning.
The city’s AQI was recorded at 69. Under the standard classification, an AQI between 51 and 100 falls in the Moderate category, while readings above 100 indicate progressively poorer air quality.
Residents are advised to stay alert during thunderstorms, particularly when lightning and strong winds are reported.
