Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of conferring the Bharat Ratna upon former Prime Ministers Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, along with agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, demands for bestowing the prestigious award upon Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray have surged. Both Shiv Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray have urged the Modi government to honor Thackeray with the Bharat Ratna.

In a statement on Friday, Sanjay Raut pointed out that the rule allows a maximum of three Bharat Ratna awards per year and criticized the Modi government for overlooking Thackeray for consideration. Raut emphasized the significant role played by Thackeray in influencing Hindu sentiments across India and in the celebration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Echoing similar sentiments, MNS chief Raj Thackeray emphasized Thackeray’s contributions in kindling pride among Hindus across the country and demanded that the government extend the same generosity shown to other leaders to confer the Bharat Ratna upon Thackeray.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samajwadi Party supremo Mayawati reiterated her stance on the Modi government’s approach to conferring the Bharat Ratna, highlighting the omission of Dalit icons from the recent honors. Mayawati stressed the importance of recognizing Dalit personalities and urged the government to pay attention to their contributions, particularly mentioning the significant role played by Shri Kanshiram ji in advancing the interests of Dalits.

The calls for honoring Balasaheb Thackeray with the Bharat Ratna come amidst a backdrop of political maneuvering and strategic considerations, with various leaders vying to shape the narrative ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. As discussions continue to unfold, the decision regarding Thackeray’s inclusion in the list of Bharat Ratna awardees remains eagerly anticipated.
