New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has once again opposed the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, asserting that the residents of the national capital are already receiving superior healthcare benefits under its own medical insurance scheme. The AAP government contended that the introduction of the Ayushman Bharat scheme would downgrade the high-quality health services currently available to Delhiites.

Delhi’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, Saurabh Bhardwaj, filed an affidavit in the Delhi High Court, outlining the government’s stance after a petition was filed by seven Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament (MPs) seeking the court’s intervention to implement Ayushman Bharat in the city.

Bhardwaj accused the BJP MPs of having a political agenda behind their petition, stating that the petition, presented as a public interest litigation, was a politically motivated move ahead of the upcoming Delhi legislative assembly elections. He claimed that the BJP was attempting to impose its preferences on the people of Delhi.

In his affidavit, Bhardwaj pointed out the omission of the Delhi government’s health insurance benefits in the BJP MPs’ petition. He suggested that this omission was intentional, as a direct comparison between Ayushman Bharat and Delhi’s own health schemes would highlight the superior quality of local services. “The schemes of the Delhi Government are far superior to the scheme of the Central Government,” he asserted.

Bhardwaj also raised concerns over the outdated data used in the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which is based on the 2011 Census. He argued that relying on such old data made the scheme less relevant for contemporary healthcare needs. “Any scheme based on outdated data cannot be imposed on any government or its people,” he added.
