Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar clarified on Tuesday that the INDIA alliance, formed by opposition parties, is focused solely on national-level elections, a statement that has stirred speculation about the future of the anti-BJP coalition in state and local elections.

Pawar, a veteran political figure, stated that there has been no discussion within the INDIA bloc regarding state or local elections. “INDIA alliance is only for national-level elections,” he said. He further added that discussions will be held within 8-10 days regarding the Maharashtra municipal elections to decide whether the alliance parties will contest together or independently.

Pawar’s remarks come after the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, announced its decision to contest the upcoming local body polls in Maharashtra alone. This decision has created a stir, as it signals a departure from the collaborative spirit of the INDIA bloc.

Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), explained the party’s decision, citing the lack of opportunities for party workers within the alliance and the need for organisational growth as key reasons for the move. Raut emphasized the importance of allowing each party in the alliance the freedom to grow and chart its own path in local politics.

Pawar’s clarification is seen as an indication that the INDIA alliance may remain largely united for national-level elections but could face challenges when it comes to cooperation at the state and local levels, especially in Maharashtra.
