Mumbai: The King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has got approval from the Ethics Committee for trial of Covid vaccine. After a long wait, the trial will be started from Thursday at KEM hospital.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had selected KEM and BYL Nair Hospitals in Mumbai to test the Covidshield vaccine, developed by Oxford University.  Recently, the trial was stopped in other parts of the country, including Pune, due to side effects of the drug, but once the issue was resolved, the Ethics Committee has given its nod to resume with the trial.

The Dean of KEM Hospital, Dr. Hemant Deshmukh said that on Tuesday, he has got permission from the Ethics Committee for the trial. From Wednesday, the hospital will screen the volunteers who will join the trial. A total of 100 volunteers will be involved.

“With the approval of the Ethics Committee, the tests will be started from Wednesday at KEM Hospital. 100 volunteers have been prepared for this and the trial on them will start from Thursday”, said dean KEM hospital, Dr Deshmukh.

The tests will be conducted over the next six months. For this, 100 healthy volunteers have been selected. The second dose will be given one month after the first dose. The volunteers will stay at your home and will be monitored for the next six months. Dr. Hemant Deshmukh said that after giving the dose to the volunteers, it will be monitored to see if their body produces the necessary antibodies to inhibit corona.

“Ethics committee has given its approval for the testing of the vaccination. The screening was to be started from September 11 but due to some problem it was put on hold and now after getting a green signal from IMRC the test will be conducted from Wednesday”, said Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani.
