Court Delivers Capital Punishment Verdict
In a significant judgment, the Pune Sessions Court on Monday sentenced accused Bhimrao Kamble to death in the Nasrapur rape and murder case. The verdict was pronounced by Special Judge S. R. Salunkhe after hearing detailed arguments from both the prosecution and defence.
The case involves the brutal sexual assault and murder of a three-year-old girl, an incident that had triggered widespread outrage across Maharashtra.
Judge Cites Severity of Crime
While delivering the judgment, the court observed that the crime fell under the “rarest of rare” category, leading to the imposition of the capital punishment. The judge also recorded detailed reasons for awarding the death sentence after concluding that the evidence firmly established the accused’s guilt.
Incident That Shook Maharashtra
The crime took place on May 1 in the Nasrapur area of Pune district, shocking the local community and prompting demands for swift justice. Following the incident, Pune Rural Police arrested Bhimrao Kamble and completed the investigation, filing charges in court.
Arguments From Both Sides
During the trial, the prosecution, represented by Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Ajay Misar, argued for the strictest punishment, citing the brutality of the offence.
The defence, however, pleaded for leniency and sought life imprisonment instead of capital punishment, but the court rejected the plea after considering the gravity of the crime.
Heavy Security in Court Premises
The hearing was conducted under tight security arrangements at the Pune Sessions Court due to the sensitivity of the case and public interest. A large police deployment was made to maintain order during the proceedings.
Family members of the victim were present in court as the judgment was pronounced.
Public Reaction and Demand for Justice
Outside the court, social activists and members of the public gathered to express support for the victim’s family and demand strict punishment for the accused. Many carried placards and raised slogans calling for justice for the young victim.
With this ruling, the court has concluded one of the most closely followed criminal trials in the region, bringing a major legal resolution to a case that had deeply affected public sentiment.
