All is not lost for Congress, remains rallying point for anti-BJP sentiment

All is not lost for the Congress. The grand old party is still the rallying point for large sections of people who resent the political and economic program being pushed vigorously by the BJP.

The Congress had put up its worst-ever campaigning in the current round of assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana. The party top brass, including the functional chief Sonia Gandhi and hierarchs Rahul and Priyanka, virtually kept off the electioneering. Pulling in different directions, fratricidal leadership in both the states went into electioneering totally clueless. It was left to the candidates on the ground and the unguided rank and file to put up some semblance of fight to the rival, who had run into the fray heavily armed with the might of the organization and huge financial resources. True, the NCP led by battle-scarred party patriarch Sharad Pawar ran a spirited campaign in Maharashtra, refusing to be overawed by the ear-dinning war cry of the powerful opponent.

Analysts in media, both the armchair-bound as well as those who gathered their gleanings from the battlefield, wrote it off a Goliath Vs David duel in the both the state. The exit polls, barring one or two, predicted a total wash out of the opposition in Maharashtra and a dismal performance in Haryana. But the actual results show that the opposition did not fare that too bad.

It is for detailed analyses in the coming days to ascertain what all factors limited the widely predicted unhampered ‘rath yatra’ of the BJP. Some broad hints, however, are already there in the air. The first and foremost is economy. The recession fast gripping the entire gamut of economy, casting its lengthening shadow from capital market to agrarian crisis, has begun to be felt down to the grass roots. The BJP’s ultranationalist bravado of creating a mighty and united India would not mesmerize the electorate all the time, unless the deliver on basics like creating jobs, remunerative prices to farm produce and addressing the anxieties of minorities and marginalized sections.

The outcome also holds some lessons to the Congress. The party has been in disarray in all parts of the country after the humiliating defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. It can’t just be reactive all the time. It has to regain its story and be active. The party has to muster all its strength and command human resources down to the grass roots to build a strong organization, for the future battles. Indulging in delusional thinking that the BJP is bound to perform poorly, especially on economy front, and as the principal opposition it will make an automoatic come back is not going to save the day for the Congress.-
