Sonia Gandhi Questions Government’s Position on Gaza
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has launched a strong attack on the Narendra Modi-led government over its response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, accusing it of remaining silent despite the humanitarian crisis. In an opinion article, she alleged that Israel’s military actions amount to the destruction of the Palestinian population and questioned India’s diplomatic approach to the conflict.
Referring to findings cited from a United Nations inquiry, Gandhi highlighted the large number of civilian casualties, including children, and argued that India had failed to raise its voice on the issue despite its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.
Raises Concerns Over India’s Foreign Policy
Sonia Gandhi also criticised what she described as a shift in India’s foreign policy, claiming that New Delhi has distanced itself from traditional partners such as Palestine and Iran. According to her, this has weakened India’s influence in the Middle East and reduced its ability to play a meaningful diplomatic role in the region.
She further argued that India’s growing engagement with Israel has come at the cost of its historical image as an independent voice on international issues.
BJP Rejects Congress Leader’s Remarks
The BJP strongly criticised Sonia Gandhi’s comments, accusing the Congress of attempting to politicise a sensitive international issue. Party spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan said the Congress should focus on addressing its own organisational challenges instead of attacking the government’s foreign policy.
BJP leader T.R. Srinivas also dismissed the criticism, alleging that the Congress was trying to appease a particular section of voters. He maintained that India continues to advocate peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.
Congress Rallies Behind Sonia Gandhi
Senior Congress leaders came out in support of Sonia Gandhi’s remarks. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said India should take a clearer stand on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and criticised the government’s silence on the issue.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also endorsed her position, stating that India’s values and foreign policy traditions require the country to speak out on matters involving humanitarian concerns and the rights of the Palestinian people.
Political Debate Intensifies
Sonia Gandhi’s article has sparked a fresh political debate over India’s foreign policy and its approach to the Israel-Gaza conflict. While the Congress has demanded a stronger humanitarian position, the BJP has defended the government’s diplomatic strategy, turning the issue into the latest flashpoint between the two parties.
