Iran Announces Retaliatory Military Action
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed responsibility for targeting US military positions in the region, describing the operation as retaliation for recent American airstrikes on Iranian coastal areas. The announcement, carried by Iran’s state-run IRNA News Agency, marks a significant escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The latest development comes amid growing concerns that recent ceasefire efforts could come under renewed strain as both countries exchange strong statements.
Iranian Leaders Accuse US of Breaking Commitments
Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi accused the United States of violating diplomatic commitments by launching military action during ongoing negotiations. He alleged that Washington had once again acted against the spirit of dialogue and ceasefire efforts, insisting that blaming Iran would no longer be accepted.
Iranian military spokesperson Ibrahim al-Fiqar also issued a stern warning, claiming that Tehran’s response to the alleged US attack would be unprecedented. He further accused the United States of abandoning its commitments and warned that Iran’s retaliation would be decisive.
US Warns Against Further Violence
The United States responded by reaffirming its commitment to the existing ceasefire arrangement. US Vice President JD Vance said Washington had honoured the agreement and urged Iran to resolve any disagreements through communication rather than military action. He warned that any further violence would be met with a firm response.
The exchange of warnings has raised fresh concerns over the possibility of further military confrontation in the region.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Elsewhere
Amid the heightened tensions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the signing of a trilateral framework agreement involving the United States, Israel and Lebanon. He described the agreement as an important step toward long-term peace, stability and regional cooperation while acknowledging that more diplomatic work remains.
Uncertainty Looms Over Regional Stability
The competing claims and sharp rhetoric from both Tehran and Washington have intensified fears of a broader regional conflict. While diplomatic initiatives continue on multiple fronts, the latest military developments underscore the fragile security situation and the challenges facing efforts to maintain peace in the Middle East.
