JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, marking an important milestone for the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister Vijay.
Prabhakar formally assumed the Speaker’s chair in the Assembly amid support from legislators across parties. Leaders from both TVK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam greeted him respectfully as proceedings began in the House.
Speaker Election Marks Key Step for New Government
The election of the Speaker comes shortly after the formation of the new Tamil Nadu government following the recent Assembly elections. On Monday, Prabhakar had filed his nomination for the Speaker’s post in the presence of Chief Minister Vijay, signalling the ruling party’s official choice for the constitutional role.
Political observers view the appointment as a significant step in establishing the legislative structure of the new administration after TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly.
Prabhakar, who won from the Thousand Lights Assembly constituency seat in the 2026 Assembly elections, defeated Ezhlian Naganathan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
MLAs Take Oath in Tamil Nadu Assembly
Meanwhile, all newly elected MLAs of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly took oath as members of the House during the Assembly session held on Monday.
Several senior political leaders participated in the swearing-in process, including Edappadi K. Palaniswami, O. Panneerselvam and Udhayanidhi Stalin, along with ministers from the new TVK-led cabinet.
Before the MLAs’ oath ceremony, Chief Minister Vijay himself took oath as a member of the Assembly. The oath was administered by pro tem Speaker M. V. Karuppaiah.
Vijay Government Begins Work on Poll Promises
Soon after completing the oath formalities, Vijay signed the first set of official government files linked to major election promises and governance initiatives.
The approvals included implementation of 200 units of free electricity for eligible households and the formation of Special Task Forces aimed at tackling drug-related crimes and improving women’s safety across Tamil Nadu.
TVK secured a major political breakthrough in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by winning 108 seats and emerging as the largest party in the state Assembly, paving the way for Vijay’s rise as Chief Minister.
