One Vote Shock in Tamil Nadu: DMK Minister KR Periyakaruppan Loses Tiruppattur in Historic Cliffhanger

Tamil Nadu Witnesses One of the Closest Election Verdicts Ever

In a dramatic and unprecedented electoral outcome in Tamil Nadu politics, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) minister K. R. Periyakaruppan has lost the Tiruppattur Assembly constituency by just one vote, making it one of the narrowest defeats in recent Indian electoral history.

The seat was won by Seenivasa Sethupathy of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, who secured 83,375 votes and edged past the sitting minister after a tense and closely monitored counting process that stretched until the final ballot.

Every Vote Counts: Overseas Voter’s Journey Becomes Symbolic

A remarkable subplot to the razor-thin result has drawn widespread attention. A voter named Manikandan Sivanantham, working in Muscat, travelled back to Tiruppattur specifically to cast his vote in the constituency.

His participation, already highlighted before polling, has now gained symbolic significance as the final margin of victory stands at just one vote. His journey has been widely discussed as an example of civic responsibility and the real-world impact of individual participation in democracy.

A Verdict That Reinforces Electoral Uncertainty

The Tiruppattur result is now being compared to some of the closest electoral outcomes in India, where victories have been decided by extremely small margins. Such results underline the unpredictable nature of elections and highlight how even a single vote can alter political fortunes in tightly contested seats.

Broader Political Shift in Tamil Nadu

The larger Tamil Nadu Assembly election outcome reflects a significant political shift across the state. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has emerged as the leading force with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, positioning itself to form the next government.

The DMK finished second with 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 47 seats. Smaller parties such as the Indian National Congress and Pattali Makkal Katchi managed 5 and 4 seats respectively, reflecting a fragmented opposition landscape.
