Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and several political leaders have voiced their disappointment over the Sealdah Court’s recent judgement in the R.G. Kar junior doctor’s rape and murder case. The court ruled that the case does not qualify as a “rarest of rare” instance, sparking widespread outrage.

Speaking to the press, Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and dismay, stating, “We have always demanded capital punishment for the culprit. If our state administration had investigated the incident, we would have pursued the death penalty.”

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister reiterated her stance, calling the court’s decision deeply unsatisfactory. “In the R.G. Kar junior doctor’s rape and murder case, I am shocked to see that the court finds it is not a rarest of rare case. This crime demands capital punishment. We will now plead for the death penalty at the High Court,” Banerjee posted.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari announced that the victim’s family plans to approach a higher court to seek justice. “We will provide all possible support to the family as they pursue their case in the High Court,” Adhikari affirmed.

CPI(M) leader Minakshi Mukherjee also criticized the judgement, stating that life imprisonment does not serve justice for such a heinous crime. “The protests demanding justice have been silenced today. A crime of this magnitude warrants nothing less than the death penalty,” she said.

The R.G. Kar incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor, sending shockwaves across the state. While the Sealdah Court awarded life imprisonment to the convict, political leaders and activists insist on capital punishment, citing the crime’s severity and its impact on public conscience.
