Chennai: V Kamakoti, the director of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, has stirred debate with his recent claims that cow urine possesses anti-infective properties. Speaking at an event held at a Go Samrakshana Sala (cow protection center) in West Mambalam on January 15, coinciding with Mattu Pongal, Kamakoti asserted that five peer-reviewed scientific studies support these claims.

According to Kamakoti, experimental research has validated the antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties of cow urine, with findings published in reputed journals, including Nature. He specifically referenced a 2021 study by Rohit Kumar from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Haryana, which analyzed molecular signatures in cow urine and predicted bioactive properties. Additional studies from journals like the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and the International Journal of Recent Advances in Multidisciplinary Research were also cited to bolster his argument.

During his speech, Kamakoti shared an anecdote about a monk who reportedly recovered from a high fever by consuming cow urine. While the authenticity of the story could not be independently verified, Kamakoti emphasized the importance of further research into natural remedies and traditional knowledge systems, highlighting their potential applications in healthcare, natural farming, and environmental sustainability.

The comments have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters praised Kamakoti for advocating indigenous knowledge, while critics, including many on social media, questioned the scientific credibility of his claims, expressing concerns about promoting pseudoscience.
