In a surprising turn of events, Sam Pitroda, the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, has decided to step down from his position. This decision comes in the wake of a major political controversy sparked by Pitroda’s recent remarks, which were widely criticized as insensitive and racist.
The announcement of Pitroda’s resignation was made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who accepted Pitroda’s decision. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the decision was taken by Pitroda himself, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
Pitroda, a prominent figure in Indian politics and a former advisor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, had come under fire for his comments regarding the physical appearance of Indians from different regions. In an interview, he attempted to illustrate India’s diversity by making reference to how people in various parts of the country resemble different ethnicities.
“We could hold the country as diverse as India together. Where people in the east look like the Chinese, people in the west look like the Arabs, people in the north look like, maybe, white and people in the south look like Africans. It does not matter. All of us are brothers and sisters,” Pitroda said.
However, these remarks backfired, causing widespread outrage and prompting the Congress party to distance itself from Pitroda’s statement. Jairam Ramesh condemned the analogy, describing it as “unacceptable, unfortunate, and absolutely wrong.” He reiterated the Congress’s commitment to unity in diversity but emphasized that Pitroda’s remarks did not reflect the party’s stance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in on the controversy, criticizing Pitroda’s comments during his rallies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Modi expressed anger over what he referred to as “Rahul Gandhi’s Sam uncle” comments on the skin color of Indians. He highlighted previous instances where the Congress allegedly discriminated against individuals based on their appearance, citing the opposition to President Droupadi Murmu’s presidential bid due to her dark skin.
Pitroda’s resignation marks the culmination of a tumultuous period for the Indian Overseas Congress and serves as a reminder of the importance of sensitivity and inclusivity in political discourse.
