Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has mounted a fierce attack on the ruling Mahayuti alliance after a large number of its candidates secured unopposed victories ahead of the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections scheduled for January 15. Calling the developments alarming, Chaturvedi said such outcomes strike at the very foundation of democratic choice.
Speaking on Saturday, the Rajya Sabha MP alleged that voters were being denied their basic right to choose representatives, as candidates were allegedly forced out of the race even before polling. She described the situation as deeply disturbing and questioned the silence of constitutional authorities.
According to Chaturvedi, pressure tactics are being systematically used to clear the electoral field. She claimed that investigative agencies are invoked to intimidate opposition candidates, and where that fails, financial inducements are allegedly offered to ensure withdrawals. “This is not a fair contest anymore. Democracy is being hollowed out without changing the Constitution on paper,” she remarked.
The Sena (UBT) leader also raised serious concerns over the role of the Election Commission, alleging that the poll body has failed to act despite the unprecedented number of unopposed results. She warned that such practices could set a dangerous precedent for future elections.
Her remarks come amid reports that 68 Mahayuti candidates have already been declared elected unopposed across several municipal corporations. The BJP accounted for the largest share, followed by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction. Key urban bodies including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kalyan-Dombivli and Panvel featured prominently in the list.
