Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 at the Jio World Centre, marking a significant milestone for India’s global outreach in the media and entertainment sector.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister described WAVES as a “historic initiative” that connects artists, innovators, investors, and policymakers from over 100 countries, adding, “WAVES is not just an event—it is a global platform that belongs to every artist and creator.”

Held under the theme “Connecting Creators, Connecting Countries,” the four-day summit positions India as a global hub for media, entertainment, and digital innovation. PM Modi underscored that the summit embodies India’s vision of uniting global creative forces and shaping the future of storytelling, technology, and talent through collaboration and innovation.

Technology with a Human Touch

Calling for “creative responsibility” in a tech-driven age, PM Modi stressed the need for sensitive storytelling. “Humans should not be turned into robots. We need to make them more sensitive,” he said. His remarks come amid concerns over rising exposure to controversial online content, which recently led the Supreme Court to seek a government response.

The Prime Minister also urged content creators to protect the younger generation from anti-humanity ideas, promoting a balance between freedom of expression and social responsibility.

Expanding India’s Global Footprint

Highlighting India’s rising profile in film production, digital content, fashion, music, gaming, and live concerts, Modi quipped, “Like Indian ‘khana’, I am sure Indian ‘gaana’ will also become globally popular. The screen size may be becoming mini but the message is becoming mega.”

The WAVES Marketplace, launched during the summit, is set to facilitate large-scale networking between 6,100+ buyers, 5,200+ sellers, and over 2,100 projects.

Global Media Dialogue and India’s $50 Billion Goal

For the first time, India is hosting the Global Media Dialogue (GMD), with participation from 25 countries at the ministerial level—an unprecedented diplomatic step in the media and entertainment space.

A key goal of WAVES 2025 is to expand India’s entertainment market to $50 billion by 2029, significantly enhancing its share in the global entertainment economy.

Showcasing India’s Creative Talent

PM Modi also visited the Bharat Pavilion and the immersive “Creatosphere” zone, interacting with creators from the ‘Create in India’ challenge, which drew over 1 lakh entries nationwide.

The summit features:

  • 42 plenary sessions
  • 39 breakout sessions
  • 32 masterclasses
  • Participation from 90+ countries
  • 10,000+ delegates
  • 1,000 creators
  • 350+ startups
