War of words ensues over Wadhwans, Congress – BJP trade allegations

Both the parties blame each other for the permission given to the accused in multi crore financial scam.

The sensational journey of the Wadhwans of DHFL, Yes Bank and PMC Bank Scam fame, from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar on the permission by Principal Secretary (Special), Home Amitabh Gupta has opened a can of worms. While opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the competency of home minister Anil Deshmukh, Congress, on the other hand, has gone a step ahead alleging that the BJP leaders have facilitated the permission as they had financial interests with the Wadhwans.

In a statement Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said, “BJP has financial connections with the Wadhwans and the permission to travel given by Amitabh Gupta, could fact be the brain child of BJP leaders. Since Wadhwan group had been one of the main donors of BJP, the former had helped the family members to travel to Mahabaleshar. Since it was the BJP government that appointed Amitabh Gupta, possibilities that some BJP leader had put in word for the permission can’t be ruled out,” Sawant said. Claiming that the state government has taken action against Amitab Gupta, Sawant dared the Modi government to take action on Gupta.

Sawant also alleged that a subsidiary of DHFL, RKW Developers Pvt Ltd, Skill Realtors Pvt Ltd and Darshan Developers had donated Rs 20 Cr to BJP. “Interestingly, these three companies suffered losses during the years prior to the donations. Hence they cannot donate such a huge fund to BJP,” he said. Similarly, accordingly to Savant, there is ample room for doubt as a BJP MP and close confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi R Chandrashekhar is developing Vijaydurg Port in partnership with Previlage Hi Tech, the company owned by Wadhwan. “Hence the baseless allegations by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya does not hold substance,” Savant said.

Reacting to the statement, Somaiya claimed that sending Gupta on forced leave was nothing but eyewash and demanded that home minister Anil Deshmukh should resign immediately.

Somaiya said, “Wadhwan brothers are accused in DHFL, Yes Bank and PMC Bank scam. ED, CBI and Mumbai police have registered different offences against them. They are on bail and reportedly absconding. It is surprising that despite aware of these facts, Gupta allowed them to travel to Mahabaleshwar. This is serious lapse right under the nose of home minister Anil Deshmukh, hence he must resign immediately.” Somaiya has lodged a complaint at Mulund police station as well as written to Union Cabinet Secretary to take strict action in the matter.
