APMC market shuts down from April 11 for onions, potatoes and vegetable market to shut
Mumbai: The fruits, vegetables, onions and potatoes will now come directly to the city instead of APMC market. The APMC authorities have told that they are unable to control the load of arrival of wholesalers which is nothing less than 50,000 during this lockdown. It is difficult to control crowd pouring in market and also the social distancing becomes next to impossible.
Meanwhile, a trader from Spies (masala)market is identified with the Corona. He was although not coming to the market from March 21, the fear has gripped in the leaders and other vendors of community transmission.
Anil Chavan , Seceetary of the APMC market confirmed that they are unable to handle about 50,000 odd wholesalers in the APMC market, during outbreak of Coronavirus, the APMC market Association decided to close it from April,11 .
The hub of economy, Mumbai city has daily requirements of 3 tonnes of vegetables and fruits. Keeping this in mind, the state government had guided the APMC authorities to send 300 trucks and temps directly to Mumbai.
“The idea was the wholesalers pick vegetables and fruits from the four identified places Mulund-Thane Toll Naka, Somaiya Ground in Sion, MMRDA ground in Bandra-Kurla Complex and Dahisar check nakas.
The state government had asked the authorities to send tempos and trucks loaded with fruits, vegetables, onions, potatoes to these four -identified places. However, daily 50,000 and above wholesalers from various pockets of Mumbai started pouring, ” said Chavan.
Chavan also informed that community transmission can be rapid in the market thus, the market is shut till further decision.
The APMC market after lockdown was receiving 150 tempos and trucks laden with fruits and vegetables now same will be diverted to the four-identified places so as the crowd is maintaining social distancing .
Meanwhile the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has approached the authorities of APMC so as they can start disinfection in ware houses from April,11. In absence of traders and loaders it will be easy to fumigate the whole market of vegetables, fruits , onions and potatoes.
