Coalition Talks Begin: Vijay Eyes Alliance to Cross Majority in Tamil Nadu

TVK Falls Short, Pushes for Government Formation

Actor-turned-politician Vijay is moving quickly to secure power in Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest force with 108 seats in the Assembly. Despite the strong debut, the party remains short of the majority mark of 118, prompting efforts to build a coalition.

As per India Today sources, Vijay is preparing to initiate discussions with multiple opposition parties to gather the numbers required to form the government.

Talks Likely With Congress, Left and Regional Parties

According to sources cited by India Today, TVK is expected to reach out to parties including the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Indian Union Muslim League. Invitations for formal talks are likely to be sent soon as negotiations gather pace.

These parties were earlier aligned with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, but the current political scenario has opened the door for new alignments.

Numbers Could Easily Cross Majority

The Congress secured five seats in the election, while IUML, CPI, CPI(M), and VCK won two seats each. If these parties extend support to TVK, the Vijay-led formation would comfortably cross the halfway mark and stake claim to form the government.

Vijay Elected Legislature Party Leader

Following the election results, Vijay convened a meeting of newly elected MLAs, where he was unanimously chosen as the leader of the TVK legislature party. This formal step has strengthened his position as the face of the potential new government.

Congress Signals Cautious Approach

Sasikanth Senthil, Congress MP, told India Today that the party would take a considered and collective decision regarding any alliance. He emphasized that the interests of Tamil Nadu would remain the guiding factor in any future move.

He also clarified that while internal discussions may include diverse views, the Congress would not compromise on its ideological commitments and would act after consultation with its central leadership.

DMK Suffers Major Setback, Political Landscape Shifts

The election results marked a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics. The DMK, led by M. K. Stalin, was reduced to 59 seats, moving into the opposition. The AIADMK finished third with 47 seats, indicating a reshaping of the state’s traditional political order.

Allies and Smaller Parties Hold Key

Other parties also made smaller gains, with the PMK winning four seats, while the BJP and AMMK secured one seat each. The DMDK also managed to win a seat, highlighting a fragmented mandate where smaller players could influence government formation.

Push for New Political Alignment

Adding to the momentum, Vijay’s father S. A. Chandrasekhar publicly urged the Congress to support TVK, suggesting that such an alliance could revive the party’s political strength in the state.
