Washington D.C: In a sweeping move, the newly sworn-in Donald Trump administration has frozen all foreign aid, including assistance to Ukraine, while exempting only Israel and Egypt. The decision was announced on Friday, signaling a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy.

The freeze includes all forms of foreign aid, from development assistance to military funding. However, emergency food and military aid to Israel and Egypt remain unaffected. In an internal memo, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the freeze, stating, “No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved.”

The freeze is part of President Trump’s “America First” policy, which prioritizes domestic interests and tightly restricts U.S. financial assistance abroad. This decision could have significant implications for countries relying on U.S. aid, especially Ukraine, which has received billions in military aid under former President Joe Biden in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

The freeze is seen as a reflection of Trump’s push for greater control over U.S. foreign spending, focusing on reducing assistance to foreign nations in line with his campaign promises to put America’s interests first. While Israel and Egypt have been granted exceptions due to their strategic importance to U.S. policy, other countries, including Ukraine, will have to wait for approval before any new foreign aid funds can be allocated.
