Tirupati: A stampede in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, on the evening of January 8, tragically claimed the lives of at least six devotees and left many others injured. The incident occurred as thousands of pilgrims gathered at the revered Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple on Tirumala Hills to secure tokens for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam—an annual and highly anticipated festival beginning on January 10.

What Exactly Happened?

The chaos erupted near the Vishnu Nivasam temple, where the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) had set up counters to distribute tokens for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam. This special 10-day festival, during which devotees are allowed a special darshan of the deity through the northern entrance, draws a massive crowd from across India.

By Wednesday morning, large crowds had already gathered at designated counters, including one at MGM High School in Bairagipatteda. As the day progressed, the number of devotees swelled, and the crowd grew restless. According to reports, the stampede began when a gate was opened to assist a distressed woman, prompting a surge of people rushing forward. The ensuing chaos led to fatalities and numerous injuries.

Crowd Surge and Token Distribution

To manage the large turnout, TTD had arranged the distribution of 120,000 tokens for the first three days of the festival (January 10-12). These tokens were for ‘sarva darshan’, a free darshan opportunity for worshippers. Special counters were set up across 94 locations in Tirupati, including the Vishnu Nivasam, Srinivasam, and Bhudevi complexes.

However, despite meticulous planning, the overwhelming number of devotees at the counters, particularly at Srinivasam, created a stampede-like situation. An official remarked that the crowd size far exceeded expectations, making it difficult to manage the situation, leading to the tragic incident.

Government’s Response to the Tragedy

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “The death of several devotees in a stampede near Vishnu Nivasam in Tirupati for tokens to visit Tirumala Srivari Vaikuntha Dwara has shocked me. This tragic incident, which took place at a time when devotees had gathered in large numbers for tokens, deeply disturbed me.”

He assured that relief efforts were underway and medical aid was being provided to the injured. “I have directed higher officials to take relief measures… to provide better medical treatment to the injured and save their lives,” Naidu added.

TTD Issues Apology

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) expressed deep regret over the incident. Bhanu Prakash, a board member of TTD, called the event “unfortunate” and sought forgiveness from the devotees. “Lives lost cannot be brought back, and we sincerely apologize to Srivari devotees,” he said. He also acknowledged lapses in crowd management and assured that strict measures would be implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Condolences from Political Leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and sorrow over the loss of lives. In a message from the PMO, he said, “Pained by the stampede in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover soon. The AP Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.”
