“Time for New Leadership”: Jayant Patil Signals Resignation as NCP (SP) State Chief, Sparks Speculation

Mumbai: A significant political shift may be underway in Maharashtra as Jayant Patil, the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), announced his intention to resign from his post. The declaration came during the party’s foundation day celebration held in Pune, where Patil openly advocated for a generational transition in leadership.

“Pawar Saheb gave me immense opportunities and I’ve carried this responsibility for seven years. Now, the party must make way for new leadership,” Mr. Patil stated, his voice trembling with emotion as workers shouted appeals for him to reconsider.

Attempting to pacify the crowd, Mr. Patil added, “This is Pawar Saheb’s party, and the final decision rests with him. Our journey is long, and I’m grateful for everyone’s support.” Mr. Pawar, observing quietly, did not immediately comment on the development.

In a notable follow-up, banners supporting Patil were put up outside the NCP (SP) headquarters on the following day. The move reflected growing speculation within political circles that Patil’s resignation offer might spark a leadership contest or a broader restructuring within the party’s state unit.
