In a significant administrative decision, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government has cancelled approvals for 46 development projects worth ₹245.85 crore that were previously sanctioned under the earlier Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) administration. The projects were to be funded through temple revenues across Tamil Nadu.
The announcement was made by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, which stated that the decision followed legal complications and concerns over financial pressure on temple institutions.
Marriage Halls and Commercial Complexes Among Cancelled Projects
According to official details, the scrapped projects include 29 marriage hall constructions estimated at ₹115.77 crore and 17 commercial complexes valued at ₹130.08 crore.
These projects had been approved earlier but had not yet reached the construction stage. Officials confirmed that despite prior announcements, groundwork for the projects had not begun in any of the locations.
Court Orders and Financial Concerns Behind Move
The HR&CE Department cited ongoing court-related restrictions and concerns about the sustainability of temple finances as key reasons for withdrawing the approvals.
Authorities reportedly felt that diverting large-scale temple funds into commercial infrastructure could place additional strain on religious institutions already managing operational and maintenance costs.
Temple Funds to Be Redirected
Following the cancellation, the government has indicated that the funds originally allocated for these projects will now be redirected toward temple development, maintenance, and devotee-centric welfare initiatives.
Officials said the revised approach aims to prioritise religious infrastructure and services directly benefiting worshippers rather than large-scale commercial construction projects.
Major Shift in Temple Fund Utilisation Policy
The decision marks a notable shift in how temple resources are planned to be used in the state. While earlier proposals focused on revenue-generating and community infrastructure projects, the new direction appears to emphasise core temple welfare and religious development activities.
Political and Administrative Impact
The move is expected to trigger debate over the use of temple funds and the role of religious institutions in funding public infrastructure, as Tamil Nadu continues to witness policy changes affecting temple administration and governance.
