Supreme Court Permits Bihar Voters Excluded from Draft Electoral Roll to Apply Online, Criticizes Political Parties for Failing to Correct Names During SIR

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday granted relief to voters in Bihar whose names were omitted from the draft electoral roll, allowing them to submit applications online for inclusion.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi clarified that applicants can submit any of the eleven documents listed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) or an Aadhaar card as proof of residence.

The remarks came while hearing petitions challenging the ‘special intensive revision’ (SIR) of the voter list ahead of upcoming elections in Bihar.

During the hearing, the bench also criticized political parties for their lack of initiative in ensuring that names of deleted voters were corrected during the SIR exercise. The court noted that despite the ECI reporting 85,000 new voters coming forward for registration, only two objections were filed by booth-level agents of political parties.
