New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Monday issued a stern directive to YouTubers and comedians who mocked persons with disabilities in their online content and stand-up performances. The court instructed them to issue public apologies across all platforms and warned that financial penalties could be imposed for any future violations.

The order comes after multiple complaints were filed against online content creators for making insensitive jokes targeting persons with disabilities, sparking public outrage. The bench emphasized that while humor is a vital part of life, ridiculing vulnerable sections of society crosses ethical boundaries.

A court spokesperson highlighted that the apologies must be posted on social media, YouTube channels, podcasts, and other digital platforms where the content appeared. The Supreme Court made it clear that repeat violations would attract strict financial penalties.

In addition to the apology directive, the court asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to formulate comprehensive guidelines for the language used on digital platforms, ensuring respect and dignity for persons with disabilities and other marginalized communities. The ministry has been advised to consult relevant bodies and stakeholders while drafting these guidelines.

Senior legal experts and advocacy groups welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, stating that the move sends a strong message about responsible digital content creation. They suggested that influencers should not only apologize but also use their platforms to raise awareness about disability sensitivity.
