Days after the tragic collapse of the Kohinoor Apartment in Bhiwandi claimed multiple lives, the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) has announced a sweeping crackdown on structurally unsafe buildings across the city. Civic authorities have ordered immediate preventive measures, including evacuations and utility disconnections, to minimise the risk of similar disasters.
Emergency Review Meeting Held After Collapse
The decisions were taken during a high-level disaster management review meeting chaired by Bhiwandi Mayor Narayan Choudhary. Senior municipal officials, disaster management teams and civic engineers reviewed the city’s preparedness and the condition of vulnerable structures.
During the meeting, officials informed the Mayor that 238 buildings have been classified under the C-1 category (extremely dangerous), while 836 buildings fall under the C-2A category, requiring urgent attention and safety measures.
Unsafe Buildings To Be Vacated Immediately
The Mayor directed civic officials to begin the immediate evacuation of residents living in these high-risk buildings. Authorities were also instructed to disconnect electricity and water connections to vacated structures to ensure that no one re-enters the premises and to reduce the possibility of accidents.
Officials have also been asked to provide copies of structural inspection reports (panchnama) to both property owners and occupants while issuing evacuation notices, ensuring greater transparency during the process.
Temporary Shelter For Evacuated Families
To assist residents displaced by the evacuation drive, the municipal corporation has decided to arrange temporary accommodation in civic buildings. According to officials, affected families will also receive food and other basic necessities for an initial period of five to six days until alternative arrangements are made.
The administration said the measures are aimed at protecting lives and preventing another structural tragedy in the city.
