In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent remark characterizing the Chandigarh mayoral polls as a “murder of democracy,” Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut has stirred controversy with his pointed response, drawing parallels to the political landscape in Maharashtra.

Raut’s statement, “What happens by taking cognizance? Cognizance was taken in Maharashtra too. Murder of democracy first happened in Maharashtra…what did the Supreme Court do? The Assembly Speaker did not listen to it (SC) and gave a wrong decision and established an unconstitutional government, now we will see what the Supreme Court is going to do next,” reflects simmering tensions and political maneuvering in the state.

The reference to Maharashtra’s political turmoil stems from the contentious events surrounding the formation of the government in 2019, following a closely contested election. Raut’s assertion implies dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of decisive action by the Supreme Court in addressing alleged breaches of democratic norms in Maharashtra.

The Supreme Court’s characterization of the Chandigarh mayoral polls as a “murder of democracy” underscores the gravity of the situation and raises questions about the integrity of electoral processes. The apex court’s intervention in such matters carries significant implications for upholding democratic principles and ensuring fair governance.
