‘Political Demonetisation, Don’t Do It’: Shashi Tharoor’s Explosive Warning on Women’s Quota Bill

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Centre in the Lok Sabha, warning that linking the implementation of women’s reservation to delimitation would unfairly delay justice for women and could trigger major political consequences.

Participating in the debate, Tharoor accused the government of turning a long-awaited reform into a politically sensitive exercise by tying the Women’s Reservation Bill to delimitation and future parliamentary expansion.

Tharoor Says Women’s Reservation Is Being Delayed

Tharoor criticised the government’s approach, saying that the promise of women’s reservation has been “wrapped in barbed wire” by linking it to processes such as the 2011 Census, expansion of Parliament, and delimitation.

He argued that women’s reservation is a reform ready to be implemented immediately and should not be made dependent on one of the most contentious administrative exercises in India’s political history.

According to Tharoor, delaying the implementation of the quota in this manner amounts to putting the aspirations of Indian women on hold.

‘States That Controlled Population Will Be Punished’

The Congress leader also warned that future delimitation based on population would reward states that failed to control population growth while reducing the political strength of states that successfully managed demographic growth.

He said this would send the wrong message by penalising governance success and rewarding failure.

Tharoor questioned whether the country wants a system where “governance excellence leads to political irrelevance,” warning that such a move could deepen regional tensions.

Compares Delimitation Push to Demonetisation

In one of his strongest remarks, Tharoor compared the Centre’s push for delimitation to the hurried implementation of demonetisation, saying the country has already seen the consequences of rushed policy decisions.

He warned that delimitation could become “political demonetisation” if pushed through without consensus.

According to him, rushing such a politically sensitive exercise without broader agreement could cause long-term institutional and political disruption.

Debate Over Women’s Quota Intensifies

Tharoor’s remarks come amid increasing political debate over the government’s roadmap for implementing the Women’s Reservation Act, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

While the government has projected the law as a landmark step for women’s empowerment, opposition parties have raised concerns over the decision to delay implementation until after delimitation.

The Congress leader insisted that women’s reservation is a “moral imperative” and should not be tied to what he described as a “demographic minefield.”

His remarks are likely to intensify the debate over whether the women’s quota can be implemented independently of the delimitation process.
