Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar expressed his dismay on Saturday over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to recognize his nephew Ajit Pawar’s faction as the legitimate NCP, including granting them the party’s name and symbol. Pawar asserted that such a move had never occurred before, where the founders of a political party were ousted from their own creation.

Calling the decision unlawful, Sharad Pawar announced that he had approached the Supreme Court to challenge the ECI’s order. “It has never happened before that those who formed a political party were removed from the party. Not only this, the party symbol was also taken away. This decision was not in accordance with the law. We have approached the Supreme Court in this matter. We will need to increase our public outreach,” Pawar stated, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Earlier on Friday, Sharad Pawar had subtly criticized his nephew, stating that while he was not concerned about losing the NCP name and symbol, the people did not approve of those who strayed from the party’s ideology.

Addressing a public meeting in Satara, Pawar emphasized that while power is transient, ideologies, policies, and the vision to progress the nation are enduring. He lamented the deviation of some party members from the established path, noting that while some seized control of the party, others appropriated its symbol. Pawar maintained that despite such challenges, he remained undeterred, as people rejected those who compromised on ideology for personal gains.

In response to the ECI’s decision, Sharad Pawar has sought an urgent hearing before the Supreme Court and urged for the early listing of the plea challenging the recognition of the Ajit Pawar faction as the authentic NCP.
