The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) clinched victory in a motion of trust tabled in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday, with 54 out of 62 AAP MLAs casting their votes.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal dispelled rumors of AAP MLAs defecting, attributing their absence to various reasons such as incarceration, illness, or travel commitments. Kejriwal underscored the need for the motion of confidence, citing alleged attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to poach AAP MLAs and destabilize his government.
Challenging the BJP’s tactics, Kejriwal asserted that while arrests may target him personally, his ideologies remain resilient. He emphasized AAP’s status as a significant challenger to the BJP, highlighting attacks and arrests faced by party members.
Kejriwal accused the BJP of hindering the Delhi government’s functioning by usurping control over the Services department and bureaucracy, alleging interference in administrative affairs.
The trust vote coincided with Kejriwal’s virtual appearance before the Rouse Avenue Court in response to a complaint filed by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) over alleged non-compliance with summons. Kejriwal expressed his desire to attend the court physically but cited scheduling conflicts due to ongoing confidence and budget sessions.
