New Delhi: Indian Overseas Congress chief Sam Pitroda on Friday issued a clarification regarding his controversial statement that “Pakistan feels like home”, stressing that his comments were intended to highlight the shared history and cultural ties between the two nations, rather than belittle India or its armed forces.

In a statement posted on X, Pitroda said, “My intention has always been to call attention to the realities,” and reiterated that his remarks were aimed at fostering honest dialogue, empathy, and a more grounded approach to India’s role and image globally.

Pitroda also recalled his earlier critique of the ‘Vishwaguru’ narrative, which he described as a myth suggesting India is always on everyone’s mind. He said the caution was meant to stress that foreign policy should prioritize real influence, mutual trust, peace, and regional stability, rather than relying on bravado or optics.

He further emphasized the need to defend democracy, stating: “Ensuring free, fair elections; strengthening institutions; empowering youth; protecting minority rights; resisting polarization — these are not partisan issues but reflect the essence of who we are as a nation.”

Addressing the controversy directly, Pitroda said, “If my words have caused confusion or hurt, I want to clarify that my aim was never to belittle anyone’s suffering or undermine legitimate concerns.” He reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, respectful dialogue, and building a future where institutions are strengthened and actions align with ideals.

The remarks that sparked the debate came earlier Friday, when Pitroda said he always felt at home during his visits to Pakistan and called on the BJP-led central government to engage in talks to resolve bilateral issues.

The comments drew a sharp response from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which demanded an apology from the Gandhi family and described Pitroda’s words as an “insult” to the Indian armed forces
