Patna: In a significant political twist for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the party’s women’s wing state president Ritu Jaiswal has filed her nomination as an independent candidate from the Parihar constituency for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The move comes after Jaiswal expressed disappointment at being denied a ticket by the RJD, calling the decision a “betrayal” by the party leadership.

Jaiswal, 48, stated that while the party offered her a ticket from Belsand constituency, she refused, saying it would be a compromise against her conscience. “I will contest from Parihar. It is my constituency and my people,” she affirmed while submitting her nomination on Monday.

Born on March 1, 1977, in Hajipur, Jaiswal is married to former civil servant Arun Kumar, who took voluntary retirement to serve his village and provides free coaching to students across Bihar. Over the years, Jaiswal has emerged as a prominent grassroots leader, often raising issues related to education, infrastructure, and local governance, earning her the popular moniker ‘Mukhiya Didi’.

Jaiswal has previously contested elections twice. In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, she narrowly lost the Parihar seat to BJP’s Gayatri Devi by just 1,569 votes. She also contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Sheohar, where she was defeated by JD-U leader Lovely Anand by a margin of less than 30,000 votes. Despite the losses, she has maintained substantial support among voters in her region.

A daughter-in-law of former RJD Bihar president Ram Chandra Purve, Jaiswal expressed her frustration at the RJD leadership for denying her a ticket despite her strong performance in previous elections. The party has not publicly commented on its decision regarding her candidature.
