Panchkula: Former Punjab Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa has rejected claims of foul play following the death of his son, Akeel Akhtar, in August, describing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Mustafa warned that those filing false complaints leading to an FIR will be held accountable under the law, emphasizing that the investigation will reveal the facts.

Mustafa stated that while his family is mourning the loss, they will not tolerate manipulation of the tragedy for dirty politics or personal motives. He pointed out that his son had struggled with drug addiction, which he identified as a major issue in Punjab. The retired IPS officer noted that injections were found scattered in Akeel’s room, and by the time he found him, his son had already passed away.

He clarified that the death was caused by a drug overdose and that conducting a post-mortem was crucial to avoid future complications regarding the investigation. “It was a drug overdose. My family told me not to have a post-mortem done, but I insisted, and my suspicions were confirmed,” Mustafa said.

The controversy stems from a video recorded by Akeel in August, where he accused his father of having an illicit relationship and alleged that his mother, Razia Sultana, and sister were plotting against him. Mustafa dismissed these claims, attributing them to his son’s mental health issues at the time and insisting that the video was manipulated. An FIR has been lodged against the person responsible for producing the video.

Earlier, both Mustafa and Sultana were booked in Panchkula for murder and criminal conspiracy under Sections 103(1) and 61, following a complaint by a man named Shamshuddin, who alleged that Akeel had died under “suspicious circumstances.” The FIR also named Akeel’s wife and sister in the case.

According to Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta, Akeel, a resident of Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula, was found dead at his residence on October 16. The family informed the police immediately. The complaint references the video recorded in August, which made serious allegations against Mustafa and his family members.

Mustafa, a 1985-batch retired IPS officer and former Punjab Human Rights Commission DGP, said he welcomes the ongoing investigation, asserting that the truth will emerge and those spreading false accusations will face consequences.
