Mumbai: In a significant endorsement, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale lent his full support to the biographical film ‘Phule’, following a special screening in Mumbai on Maharashtra Day. The film, directed by Ananth Mahadevan, brings to life the revolutionary contributions of social reformers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, who laid the foundation for caste and gender equality in 19th-century India.

Athawale, known for his advocacy of social justice, described the film as both culturally important and socially transformative, and called for it to be declared tax-free across India. He urged that it be made mandatory viewing for lawmakers, Parliamentarians, and even President Droupadi Murmu.

“This movie is a good attempt to highlight the contributions of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. It should be watched by everyone, especially our lawmakers, to understand the social issues it addresses. I recommend this film even to the President of India,” said Athawale in a press note.

Released on April 25, 2025, the film features Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai. It delves deep into the Phules’ fearless fight against caste oppression, patriarchy, and illiteracy, making their story relevant for today’s India. Despite facing objections from certain groups over its portrayal of caste-based discrimination, the film has drawn praise for its honest storytelling and historical fidelity.

Director Ananth Mahadevan, present at the special screening, expressed his gratitude for the minister’s public backing.

“The film is true to history and we have made it with all our heart. I am glad Athawaleji has endorsed the film today. Today, I am as happy as I am grateful to him for his wholehearted support for the film,” said Mahadevan.
