Mangaluru: In a major development, the Karnataka Police have detained eight suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in the communally sensitive coastal city of Mangaluru. The arrests were made from various parts of the district, officials confirmed on Saturday.

According to police sources, the formal arrest and announcement are expected later in the day. Five special teams were constituted to track the accused, and their swift action, aided by video surveillance footage, led to the detention of the suspects. Investigators are currently interrogating the accused to establish motive and further leads.

The murder of Suhas Shetty sent shockwaves through the region, already known for communal tensions. The killing, which took place within 500 metres of a police presence, has now sparked a political firestorm.

Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka lashed out at the state government and police, alleging serious lapses in security and intelligence. “A week before the murder, Suhas Shetty was warned by police not to carry weapons in his vehicle, and his vehicle was searched,” Ashoka claimed. “How did this message reach the killers? If he had a weapon, he might have survived.”

The BJP leader further alleged that there had been open threats made against Shetty, with provocative posts circulating before and after the incident. “A week before, the killers had put up a message saying Suhas Shetty will be finished. After the murder, they had put up another message celebrating the murder,” he told reporters.
