Raj Thackeray Demands Clarity on Language Policy in Maharashtra Schools, Urges Two-Language Formula From Grade 1

Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has once again taken a firm stance on the state’s language policies, this time addressing the issue of school education. In a letter addressed to School Education Minister Dada Bhuse, Thackeray has urged the state government to implement a two-language formula—Marathi and English—for students from Grade 1 in all schools affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

His appeal comes in response to the state government’s recent proposal to introduce a three-language formula, including Hindi, from the first grade. Although public backlash led the government to clarify that Hindi would not be mandatory, Thackeray has pointed out that no formal resolution or written directive has yet been issued, resulting in confusion among educators and parents.

Raising concerns over reports that Hindi textbooks have already begun printing based on the initial plan, Thackeray warned that if the government decides to revert to the three-language formula in the future, it must take full responsibility for the consequences.

Citing examples from other Indian states where a two-language model has been adopted successfully, Thackeray called on the Maharashtra government to follow suit and ensure clarity through an official order. He stressed that the language of instruction in early education must prioritize local relevance and practical utility.

In a separate development, Thackeray also directed MNS workers to suspend their ongoing protests demanding the mandatory use of Marathi in banks and public-facing institutions across the state. In an official communication, he acknowledged the success of the agitation in raising awareness and emphasized that it was now time for the Marathi-speaking population to take the lead.

“We’ve created enough awareness. Now, it’s up to the Marathi community to insist on the use of their language. If our own people remain passive, there’s little point in continuing the agitation,” Thackeray wrote.

He further stated his hope that the government, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, would strictly implement existing laws mandating the use of Marathi in official communications and services. Thackeray added, “We have no intention of taking the law into our hands. But the government has to enforce the law. I expect the administration to ensure Marathi is used in all official establishments throughout Maharashtra.”

Thackeray also urged his party members to remain vigilant, noting, “Pause the agitation, but do not lose sight of the issue. If the government fails to act, and Marathi people are disregarded or disrespected, our workers will engage in dialogue and take the necessary steps.”
