New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic milestone, India has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2026-28. The announcement was made by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday, who expressed gratitude to UN member states for their trust and pledged continued commitment to global development issues.
Taking to social media, Jaishankar posted: “India was elected to the Economic and Social Council for the term 2026-28 @UN today. Thank member states for their overwhelming support and reposing their trust in us. Appreciate the efforts of @IndiaUNNewYork. India remains committed to championing development issues and keep working to strengthen the ECOSOC.”
Jaishankar also lauded the efforts of India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York for successfully coordinating the campaign.
ECOSOC, one of the six principal organs established by the UN Charter in 1945, serves as the central platform for discussing and promoting international economic, social, and environmental policies. It also oversees the follow-up to major UN summits and conferences, aiming to foster collaboration on sustainable development goals.
This recent election reinforces India’s position as a proactive player on the global stage, particularly in matters related to economic reform, social equity, and environmental sustainability.
Earlier in April, India’s Permanent Mission to the UN had also organized a special event to mark the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at the UN headquarters in New York. The event celebrated Ambedkar’s legacy as the architect of the Indian Constitution and his global influence on democratic values and human rights.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, had stated at the time: “Dr. Ambedkar was a leading figure in India’s freedom struggle and the architect of India’s constitution. The one who dedicated his life to laying the foundation of our modern republic.”
He further added that the session’s theme, “The timeless appeal of Dr Ambedkar’s vision within the UN and beyond,” aligned with the UN’s celebration of 80 years since its founding.
