Railways Announces Rs 5 Lakh Compensation for Deceased, Aid for Injured in Odisha Train Derailment

A tragic train derailment near Nergundi station in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday claimed the life of a 22-year-old passenger, Suvankar Roy, and left several others injured. The accident involved the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express, prompting immediate rescue and relief operations by railway authorities.

Railways Announces Ex-Gratia for Victims

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims:

  • ₹5,00,000 to the next of kin of the deceased.
  • ₹2,50,000 for passengers with grievous injuries.
  • ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries.

Railway officials confirmed that medical teams were dispatched promptly, and the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Train Services Affected, Route Diversions in Place

Following the derailment, Mail and Express trains on the Howrah-Visakhapatnam UP Line continue to operate, but Down Line services are being diverted via Barang-Naraj-Kapilas Road, bypassing the Barang-Cuttack-Nergundi route.
